The number of dementia patients in 2019 was more than 50 million. After the next three decades, this figure will reach 150 million.
Why are its cases increasing and how to stop them
Researchers understood the changes in health around the world between 1999 and 2019. The research also included risk factors for dementia such as smoking and body mass index. During this study, it was found that the risk of death from Alzheimer’s disease, which affects the ability to think and understand, increased by 38 percent. This new research was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference.
According to Maria Carrillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, dementia cases can be reduced by heart disease, lifestyle changes, and educating people. One of the reasons for the increase in the cases of dementia is also the increasing old age. Apart from this, increasing obesity, diabetes in youth, the habit of working hours sitting in one place also increases the risk of dementia.
ICMR’s study on brain diseases says, in 2019, Alzheimer’s-dementia accounted for the highest number of 12 percent deaths after stroke in the country.
